Past 15 Years: Filpac LLC

  • Wrote a software application, marketed it, supported it and made a living from it. The application has been used in one form or another by political and organizations ranging from local to Presidential. Keeping the product viable required a diverse skill-set:
  • Collaboration Couldn't do it alone. Much was developed with help from the recruitment of experts.
  • Adaptation Transforming the application from the C: prompt to Windows to the web demonstrated an ability to learn new languages, databases and concepts.
  • Sales and Marketing Building a customer base required a combination of marketing: postal, email, phone follow-up and search-engine optimization to lure potential customers.
  • Data Migration Every new installation involved converting of the customer's legacy data, usually under a deadline and from a multiple of sources. The most recent data conversion involved 40,000 contact records from 18 separate Excel workbooks for one small state NH . It involved much cleanup and duplicate-mitigation but finished in two days with the aid of experience and an extensive library of data-standardization tools which were written mostly in C over the years.
  • Data Interchange The application includes several utilities to interface with other systems, including the reporting systems of government agencies, such as the Federal Election Commission.
  • Innovative Support Developed a three-point support program to efficiently ensure total customer satisfaction: 1 up-front training, followed by 2 an intense focus on specific customer problems, which usually required a software upgrade. 3 A unique five minutes free telephone support practice, designed to interact with existing web-based help tools, projected an ongoing personal support image but with minimum effort. A recent customer survey revealed high customer satisfaction which, in 2014, resulted in a 90-percent renewal rate in a high-turnover industry.

At one time the application generated as many as four different payroll schemes in the same payroll run, depending on the state and customer. In 1999 this client followed recommendation to deploy Citrix to utilize the different legacy, web-based and Windows applications critical to the client's business.
  • Early practitioner in the agile development method in moving character-based applications to Windows and, later, to the web. The method was to first develop a Windows GUI front-end for the FoxPro database, which could be run concurrently with the existing application.
  • Developed a complete vehicle-fleet management system for maintenance and vendors. The result for this company with more than 500 vehicles was more regular maintenance, fewer breakdowns and untold savings.
