  • Migration of SQL Server objects to PostgreSQL 8.3 (Green Plum Version) for the Sales Data Mart.
  • Re-wired cube to work against PostgreSQL star schema tables/views.
  • Introduced Cube partitioning to drastically reduce the time to create daily and weekly cube builds on large cubes.
  • Created a subsystem for automatically building these partitions via an SSIS package and metadata stored in tables specific to the needs of the respective cube. Also, made the package to load balance and speed up the overall time of building the partitions by implementing the SSIS package to use parallel process up to four partitions at a time (that's all the processors we were allowed to use on the box for parallel processing.)
  • Recommended and implemented Cube Partition Strategy where only incremental data loading and processing would be required on specific measure groups with reduced cube build times for one cube from (too big to process-estimated a week to process, crashed box) to only 4-5 hours once per week. By partitioning another cube, processing went from 12 to 3 hours, again using an incremental partition processing approach.
  • Addressed measure group granularity level (was at seconds) for a cube and reduced its daily build time from 8 hours to 8 minutes, with the added benefit of improved querying performance.

  • Duties included layout, design, optimization and job scheduling of cubes and their builds.
  • Duties also included the creation, modification, and performance optimization of Sql for all views that called out to a Teradata relational database and against over 1 billion rows of transactional data. These views were the source for all dimensions and fact tables in the cubes. Separate views were created for two main slowly changing location and product dimensions. The specific view chosen for these slowly changing dimensions was dependent on whether a full cube build or incremental cube build was being performed on the given day. Sales, returns, exchange rates, transaction counts, and mail-in-rebates each had their own dedicated cube. These cubes were combined into one final virtual cube that represented the Retail Sales Cube. Other dimensions in the cubes included were fiscal time, date comparables by location, currency, country and cumulative periods-to-date.

Data Warehouse Manager (Contractor) - AS2K, DTS, SS2K, VB.Net

Confidential - Doral, Florida

Responsibilities:

  • In charge of establishing first enterprise data warehouse that encompasses AR Aging, Inventory, and Sales history data from company’s 15 subsidiaries located throughout United States, Central and South America.
  • Set up data extraction from these subsidiaries through FTP, Replication, and Email (Excel spreadsheets.) Each data extraction presents its own unique challenges in that each subsidiary is using one of five different ERP systems. AR Aging and Inventory data are being stored as end-of-month snapshots in the cube. Each end-of-month date extraction set is associated with an end-of-month date level. A dimension has been setup that incorporates the end-of-month date data level into a time dimension, allowing for month to month tracking comparisons via the OLAP front end.
  • Created VB.Net application for the manual import of Extraction Excel/Text files (unfortunately this was the only way we could get the data from some of the subsidiaries.) This program manages the end-of-month date datasets; and calls and runs DTS packages from a stored procedure.
  • Encompassed full transaction commit/rollback capabilities and error handling in the DTS package with strong use of DTS Global variables that are populated initially from the user interface and then passed through the stored procedure. These techniques were critical to make sure that each data set was completely free of errors before being appended to the fact table.
  • Automated File archiving and registering of the import event and data files and then recorded in an import register table which enables full tracking of all data extractions by subsidiary, end-of-month date, and data category.

Data Warehouse Manager

Confidential

Responsibilities:

  • Created company's first Data Warehouse and Internet OLAP system. Warehouse is created using SQL Server 2000 batches, scripts, stored procedures, and DTS. Cubes are generated from SQL Server 2000 Analysis Manager. The system is updated nightly with data from company's legacy accounting system and other legacy data stores. Additional tables in SQL Server were created and used for cross-referencing, adjustments, and security (over and above the Windows Integrated Security used for authentication.)
  • The cubes entail hundreds of different calculated fields (variances, rolling 12s, YTD, monthly totals, yearly totals, etc. etc. etc.) across several dimensions (location, product, salesperson, brand manager, three year history, 12 months, etc.) The system tracks goals, shipments, open orders, warehouse inventories, purchase orders, etc. Also, created a highly functional user-friendly extranet user interface using HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, VBScript, ASP, ADO, ADOMD (to access cube data), IIS 5.0 (using Windows Integrated Security) and SQL Server 2000 and Analysis Manager. System is used by all departments in the enterprise (from clerks to executives; but especially for management, sales and operations.)
  • Drill-down and drill-across functionality is provided against the data output using DHTML and JavaScript. Aggregated data (along dimension levels) is presented from totals of the entire company down to an individual order's line items with only a couple clicks of the mouse. Screen data is easily downloaded into Excel using a third party Excel COM object. This provides users with the raw data and/or presentation ready reports of the data (with built-in graphs) that they can save on their local computer and use for further use off-line.
