Technology Consultant

Responsibilities:

  • I was involved in the switch over of the reporting feeds that feeds the legacy reporting data warehouses from the legacy PAS system to the new PAS system. With one other consultant from Confidential, we were able to build new data load mechanisms that loads data files into the data warehouse. In addition to this, we did some data modelling to come up with an architecture (design) and created a unified community reporting database solution by merging three separate instances of RiO (RiO is a Confidential t administrative system used by the hospital trust) into one and produced automated processes that updated this new reporting database daily from the backups of the respective live RiO instances. In addition to the 3 RiO instances, data feeds from some other community health related systems were merged into the unified reporting database solution. A unified Commissioning Data Set (CDS) extract from the three instances was also done. Technologies used here include SQL Server 2008, TSQL, Visual Basic and MS Access.

DBA and Applications Performance Improvement Consultant

Responsibilities:

  • This role largely involved legacy system optimisation. I Investigated all issues with the existing database and software applications - issues includes database locking, application time-outs as a result of un-optimised and non responsive databases. Within 3 days, I was able to detect all the major problems that plagued the databases on the database server and over another two weeks, four change requests I passed were implemented and thereafter the database server became stable - this was the first time the system became stable in years. Before then, there has been no reported incident of locks and timeouts or non responsive databases. In addition to eliminating locks, time outs and server/application/query hanging, the changes implemented also reduced total daily data processing execution time from circa 220 minutes to circa 70 minutes. All these s were made in less than a third of the projected contractor hours the trust estimated for these to be resolved.
  • I developed SSIS ETL packages to automation processes and finance reports generation. This reduced the time to extract the finance files from circa 5 hours to less than 80 minutes and freed up over half a day of a senior analyst’s time for other work.
  • Conversion of a Visual Basic 6.0 data processing application to SSIS 2008
  • I setup and administered a new SQL Server 2008 server box that will serve as a replacement for the outdated SQL Server 2000 box. I administered and performance tuned the legacy SQL Server 2000 server and was actively engaged with the optimisation of all processes that runs on the SQL Servers. I drafted a strategy for the migration of data and processes such as reporting processes from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2008 and the development of a data warehouse. Business Objects and QlikView are the key reporting tools that were used to deliver the reporting requirements for this implementation.
  • I did data modelling related tasks in this role.
